Set up Groups

In this section:

Groups is where you'll facilitate communication and share resources for your church's small groups. By the end of this guide, you'll have your group types set up, tags created, and your first group ready to go!

Set up group types

Before creating your first group, set up group types to organize groups that will share a similar purpose. Common examples of group types include small groups, women's ministry, or mission teams.

You can configure the default settings for your group type so they automatically apply to any new groups you assign to it. Follow along with the Create and manage group types article to get started!

Create group tags

Next, it's time to create some tags! Tags help you organize groups in greater detail and determine your Church Center filters so congregants can easily find the groups that fit them.

Head to the Create tags article to learn how. Once you create your first group, you can choose which tags to assign it later.

Create your first group

Now that you've set up your group types and tags, you can create your first group! If you're setting up a Groups account from scratch, you can create your first group by following these steps:

  1. Select the Groups page from the top navigation in Groups.

  2. Select Create your first group at the bottom of the page.

  3. Enter a name for your group at the top of the popup.

  4. Select a group type from the dropdown. If this group doesn't belong to any of the types you created, you can select Unique Groups.

  5. Select Create group.

Once your group is created, you'll be taken to your group's Members tab. Here's an overview of what you can do from each tab on the left sidebar:

  • Members: This is where you'll manage your group's member list. Since this is a brand new group, you'll see options to View settings, Add a person, and Take a guided tour in Groups. Head to the Add a member to a group article if you want to start adding members!

  • Events: Create and manage your group's events on this tab. You can customize each event with RSVP and reminder settings so members know when and where to meet. Check out the Create an event article to learn more.

  • Resources: Upload resources, such as files, links, or documents that you can share with your leaders and members. Follow along with the Add resources article to get started.

  • Settings: Customize your new group's settings, including Church Center visibility, which allows people to search for your group on your public Church Center page. See the Manage group settings article to learn about each setting.

Manage your groups

As you continue to add more groups to your church, you can manage them using the four main pages in the top navigation:

  • Groups: View a full list of all groups in your church, with filters to sort by type, campus, status, enrollment, and more.

  • Reports: Create group reports to view group stats and attendance data across all of your church's groups.

  • Events: See an overview of upcoming events for all groups in your church.

  • People: View a full list of everyone who's an active group member across your church.
