Credit and debit cards

Donors can initiate credit and debit card donations from your organization's donation form or ask an administrator to add the donation manually. As these donations are processed, they are added to the Giving dashboard.

Detailed information about card processing fees can be found in the Processing fees article.

Warning

Canadian customers: While Canadian organizations support all major credit cards, only a limited number of debit cards will work. Visa Debit is supported, but Interac ATM cards or any card without a 3 or 4-digit CVC code will not.

Declined cards

If a card is declined, Giving will let the donor know immediately, and the donation won't be processed.

If this happens on a recurring donation, the notification will tell the donor to resolve the issue with their bank. Giving will not attempt to charge the card again until the next monthly recurrence, so the donor must give a one-time donation to cover the missed recurring donation.

Automatic card updates

Planning Center Payments uses a system that allows saved credit cards to continue working for recurring donations without donor intervention, even if the donor's bank replaces the card.

However, because not all banks and card networks support this auto-update system, a few things are in place to smooth over times when an expiring card cannot be replaced automatically:

  • New card detection: When donors enter a new card to donate, the system will check to see if there is an existing card with an older expiration date. If one exists, the old card will be swapped out for the new card automatically, and update the payment method for any future donations.

  • Confirmation emails: When a card is updated automatically or by the donor on Church Center, an email will be sent to notify the donor. In the unlikely event that the card was updated in error, the donor can then correct the mistake.

  • Proactive expiration emails: If a donor has a recurring donation on an expiring card, the donor will receive a precautionary email at the beginning of the month the card expires, so they can update the information themselves.

Disable credit card donations

If you don't want donors to give online using credit cards, you can disable them as a payment method.

  1. Select the Manage page in the top navigation in Giving.

  2. Select the Donation form tab on the left.

  3. Uncheck the Accept credit card donations box to disable credit cards as a payment method for donors. Debit card donations cannot be disabled.

If a donor selects a saved credit card or enters a new one, they will see a warning message encouraging them to add a bank account or debit card instead.
